On the 21st of January 2020, Kobe and Gianna, with six other passengers, boarded a helicopter. They were traveling to an airport in Ventura County for a basketball game in Mamba Academy, Thousand Oaks. Due to fog and light rain that morning, the chopper flew a bit low below its tracking radar. By 9:40 am, it had flown southwest of a high mountain in Calabasas. The pilot couldn't see due to the heavy presence of fog. By 9:45 am, he crashed against the mountain's side, which was 30miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles and got burned. Kobe, Gianna, and all the passengers died before the firefighters and paramedics could get to the scene.
Before her death, Gianna Bryant was a player of the Mamba Sports Academy basketball team (Mamba Baller). She developed a strong interest in basketball due to the influence of her dad. She also played for her school basketball team Harbor Day School in California.
Kobe Bryant was the coach of "Gigi's"basketball team, Los Angeles Lady Mamba, after his retirement in 2016. He coached them for four years before his sudden death in 2020.
